After a dramatic mid-career shift from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal, Deep Purple emerged as a true institution of the British hard rock community; once credited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the globe's loudest band. Their ever-changing line-up launched the careers of performers including Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, and Ian Gillan.
Since forming in Hertford, England in 1968, the band have gone through a lot; a multitude of new members (Ritchie Blackmore left and rejoined the band numerous times), an eight year hiatus and to top it off, years of drinking and substance abuse. But hey, that's Rock n' Roll baby!
Despite the band's internal problems, Deep Purple, over their long-spanning career, managed to retain a musical consistency that has kept them firmly in the public eye to this very day, earning a reputation as the pioneers of Heavy Metal.
The band's debut album, Shades of Deep Purple, is perhaps the most pop-oriented release of their career, generating a Top 5 American hit with Hush. Their third (self-titled) LP release, saw the band reach new ambitions, with songs reflecting a new complexity and density. But it wasn't until a revamp of the band's lineup (after the dismissal of Rod Evans and Nick Simper and recruiting singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover) that the true Deep Purple sound really began to emerge. Blackmore took creative control of the band, steering it towards a heavier, guitar-dominated approach which took full advantage of Gillan's powerful vocals. This new sound led to the band's most creatively successful and commercial period of their career.
Deep Purple have appeared at The Montreux Jazz Festival many times in the past, but this concert, Live At Montreux, 2006 marks a blend of old favorites and new songs from their acclaimed 18th studio album, 2005's Rapture of the Deep. The band's latest lineup features lead vocalist Ian Gillian, guitarist Steve Morse (who joined the band in 1994), newly appointed keyboardist Don Airey, original bassist Roger Glover, and drummer Ian Paice.
With nearly an hour of music, the group certainly put on a high-octane show with classic songs like Pictures of Home, Strange Kind of Woman, Hush, Black Night and not one, but two versions of Smoke On The Water - a jazz version and the classic rock rendition.
